Ascension 15–20 TipsMaster the Highest Difficulty

Ascension 15–20 is where Slay the Spire 2 becomes a puzzle. Enemies scale harder, your resources are tighter, and every decision matters. This guide covers the difficulty modifiers, enemy scaling mechanics, deck optimization for high Ascension, and the specific techniques that separate A10 players from A20 veterans.

What Is Ascension?

Ascension is Slay the Spire 2's difficulty system. Each Ascension level adds a modifier that makes the game harder. At A0 (default), you have no modifiers. At A20, you have 20 stacked modifiers that fundamentally change how you play.

The key insight: Ascension is not about playing better — it's about playing differently. Your A0 strategies do not work at A15+. You need to understand the modifiers and adapt your deck-building accordingly.

Progression path: A0 → A5 (learn fundamentals) → A10 (master one character) → A15 (understand modifiers) → A20 (optimize everything).

The Most Impactful Modifiers

Not all modifiers are equally difficult. Here are the ones that change your strategy the most:

Ascension 1: Tough Enemies

All enemies have +5% HP. Seems small, but compounds across the run.

Impact:

Moderate

Strategy:

Prioritize scaling. You need stronger synergies to kill enemies before they kill you.

Ascension 2: Increased Curse Rate

Curses appear more often in rewards and events.

Impact:

Moderate

Strategy:

Prioritize card removal. Curses dilute your deck and slow your scaling.

Ascension 3: Reduced Potion Effectiveness

Potions heal 25% less and deal 25% less damage.

Impact:

High

Strategy:

Do not rely on potions. Build a deck that survives without them.

Ascension 4: Reduced Gold

You earn 25% less gold from combat.

Impact:

High

Strategy:

Prioritize free relics. Shops become less valuable. Focus on card rewards.

Ascension 5: Reduced Healing

Campfire rests heal 25% less.

Impact:

Very High

Strategy:

Prioritize block and sustain relics. You cannot rely on campfires to heal.

Deck Optimization for High Ascension

At high Ascension, your deck needs to be tighter and more focused than ever. Here are the principles:

1. Smaller Deck Size

At A0, a 20-card deck is acceptable. At A15+, aim for 14–18 cards. Every card you skip is an active decision that makes your deck cycle faster and your synergies tighter.

Example: Removing one weak card increases your chance of drawing your best cards by 5–10%.

2. Prioritize Scaling Over Utility

At high Ascension, enemies are too strong to beat with utility cards. You need exponential scaling: Strength, Poison, Focus, or Block that compounds every turn.

Example: A Strength card is worth 3 utility cards because it scales with your entire deck.

3. Maximize Block Generation

Enemies hit harder at high Ascension. You need consistent block every turn, not just occasional defense. Aim for 8–12 block cards minimum.

Example: A 10-block card is better than a 15-damage card if you are taking 12 damage per turn.

4. Avoid Dead Cards

A "dead card" is one that does not fit your synergies. At high Ascension, dead cards kill you. Every card must contribute to your win condition.

Example: A Strength card in a Poison build is dead. Skip it, even if it looks good.

The most common A15+ mistake: Taking too many cards. Players think "more options = better." At high Ascension, fewer, more focused cards = better.

Resource Management at High Ascension

At high Ascension, resources are scarce. You cannot afford to waste gold, potions, or campfire upgrades. Here is the priority order:

1️⃣

Card Removal (Shops)

Removing a weak card is better than adding a new one. Prioritize removal over new cards.

2️⃣

Campfire Upgrades

Upgrade your best card, not your worst. Upgrading a Strength card is worth 2 new cards.

3️⃣

Rare Relics (Shops)

If you see a game-changing relic (Snecko Eye, Philosopher's Stone), buy it. Relics scale all game.

4️⃣

Potions

Save potions for bosses. Do not waste them on normal fights.
